Postage Stamp - Solids

I've been wanting to do a postage stamp quilt ever since I saw the quilt-a-long on ps i quilt. I would always go back and forth between which prints to use and which solid(s) to coordinate with them. I finally decided on using a variety of solids with random prints. This quilt was going to me for my mother, for both mothers day and recovering from back surgery, and she's been begging for a quilt with corals and lime fabrics. Those colors are hard to come by in a cute print so using solids was the way to go.

I pieced this quilt by using 2.5" strips of the solids and prints using the techniques in the quilt-a-long. I cut the strips into 4 shorter strips and divided them into sets of 9 strips (8 solids and 1 print). I sewed the strips into 3 sets of 3 and then cut them into 2.5" pieces. Then I pieced a strip from each set to make a 3x3 block containing each of the solids and a print. The finished quilt was 60x60 and had 900 little squares!

This was my first attempt at free motion quilting - I'm very happy with how it turned out :) I quilted a dense meandering pattern over the course of 3 days and 4 spools of 800m Gutermann cotton thread. Next time I'll try a less dense pattern.

For the backing I used a lime floral pattern and for the binding I used a coral dot print. I machine stitched it and love how it turned out.

Quilt for Baby Marilyn

My sister had me make a quilt for her friend who was having a baby. I was told she loved floral so I knew exactly what fabric to use! I decided to go with a simple square pattern with a white solid for some contrast. I quilted it on my machine using simple straight lines. For the backing I used a large floral print and a striped fabric for the binding.

I love my machine!

Baby Quilt

This baby quilt was made with left over HSTs from another quilt. Made with the Heirloom collection by Joel Dewberry featuring bright purple, blue, pink and green.

I quilted it with straight lines running diagonally and creating a frame with the boarder.

To add more detail I wanted to add a decorative stitch. I used a bow design on my machine. I love the extra girlishness! I backed the quilt with a solid blue and machine stitch a purple binding.

Guam Quilt

Last summer I went to Guam :) My dad is in the NAVY and has orders there so I got to go see him. While I was there I spotted a fabric store and my dad so willingly pulled in. The fabric was over priced but I found some remnants that I liked and wanted to use for a vintagey quilt I've been wanting to make. At the cash register I realized they didn't give any discount for end of bolt fabric...

I couldn't decide on a pattern until a local sewing studio was having a jelly roll marathon sewing day and decided to sign up and use this fabric.

I had plenty of fabric and was able to make 2 throw quilts. They were given to my mother and grandmother after they helped out my boyfriend buy a last minute plane ticket to come see my dad when he came back into town for a short visit. We had been dating for 1.5 yeas, it was time.

The quilting was done with a long arm at that same swing studio. It was very last minute and they were quilted over night. No extra fees for the rush! :)

Summer House Quilt for Mother's Day

I first started this quilt last year when the fabric first came out. I was inspired by this quilt and tutorial. I changed the square dimensions so that it could be made with a layer cake and 2 charm packs. I cut each fabric in the layer cake into 9 - 3" squares and each charm into 4 - 2.5" squares.

Took some planning but I was finally able to get the stripes on the star points to match up :)

The back. A pieced floral and green print.

I matched up the seam on the back to the front so when I quilted it the lines would be parallel.

Some of my favorite blocks:

This quilt was given to my grandmother for mother's day :)
